Day 4 – No news is good news!

Not too much to report today!  He had a good night – successfully slept in the bedroom, although a bit closer to the bed than normal.  Porter is walking on his own with no assistance – even on the stairs.  He peed this morning with dad, but has been reluctant to go the rest of the day.  Since Valentine’s Day was Porter’s surgery, we didn’t celebrate.  So today, Porter and I made red velvet cheesecake brownies for Dad.  Porter helped!

This evening we had a strange incident.  Porter has been reluctant to sleep on his side (his good side).  I have been pushing him over on purpose because he sleeps so much better on his side.  So far with no problems.  Tonight, I pushed him over again and he immediately fell asleep – for two solid hours.  However, when he went to position himself back over his center, he started “screaming” again – for a solid 30 seconds.  It was horrible and painful for us, and we’re not sure why.  Best guess, he used some of the muscles associated with the amputation when he attempted to “right” himself.  He was shaking all over and his heart was racing.  I won’t be pushing him over anymore for naps, unless I’m there to help him get back centered afterwards.  Poor guy, bad mom!

Mom had a night off tonight!  It was a bowling night birthday party for a friend, and since I’ve been home with him all day, dad said he’d watch him while I went out.  Of course, all the birthday party attendees knew Porter and most of the discussions were about his progress and recovery.  But it was still nice to have a “night off” – he did great with dad!

Dad still isn’t sure if amputation was the right thing. I’m hoping that, 3 years from now, when Porter is alive and happy, I will be able to tell dad “i told you so!”

  1. Hi Porter. You sound like you are doing alright for only being four days out. Sounds like you might be having phantom pain. Daisy didn’t have that but others on here have and a drug called gabapentin (sp?) is supposed to be good with helping that.

Hope your recovery continues as smoothly.

  2. Don’t beat yourself up for getting Porter a good solid 2 hours of rest. Is he still on pain meds? I have no idea why he screamed and can see where your heart would break in that position. But I want you to remember, you are not a bad mom! Look what you have done for him, yes, he is uncomfortable right now but in just a couple short weeks he will be hopping along and enjoying life. You gave him that by allowing him to become one of an elite group of Tripawds. Yes, the transformation hurts, but the end results of a longer, happier life with his family will outweigh the discomfort. And remember this, no one can recall a pain, you just remember it hurt but can’t recall the actual feeling when the pain is gone.
Hope you find comfort for your heart and Porter has a solid recovery. You are a wonderful Mom, don’t forget that. By the way… Boomer wants a bite of that red velvet you and Porter made.
Glad you got out for a “night off” you deserve it.
    Boomers Mom Tina
